Simple Chocolate Protein Soft-Serve

Working out is important.

But sometimes, motivation wavers. This is totally normal and happens to the best of us. Well, I must be the best of the best because mine is almost always wavering! Just kidding...mostly...

I remember when I first started going to a big gym, it was really intimidating. I swear the entire lot of males at the gym were profession competitors, fitness models and all around...*ahem*...lovely people on the inside?

Getting to the gym became a bit of a struggle. I wanted to go, but sometimes it took some help. Food is a great motivator. I am more or less like a puppy dog in that sense.

I introduce: Protein Soft-Serve:

Thick. Soft-serve-like, super thick milkshake tasting protein amazingness. With only a few ingredients I *KNEW* I could whip this up post-workout.

Err...I sometimes had it even if I didn't make it to the gym...OOPS. Can you blame me?

CAN YOU?

See how it spills out? Yeah...it makes A LOT! But to get a better look, let's switch to a bowl.

Ahhhh. That's better! I couldn't drink it out of the straw. It's way too thick. Don't let the pictures fool you--it is very soft-serve like! Want to amp up the texture? Add more ice. Sadly, I was out. I know, terrible!

Grab your toppings:

And let's go make some protein soft-serve! In chocolate. Because...duh!

Simple Chocolate Protein Soft-Serve

Yields 1 serving
Allergens: Gluten Free, Vegan option

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup almond milk (or preferred milk)
  • 1 scoop protein (can use whey or a vegan protein like SunWarrior)
  • 1/2 cup frozen fruit (bananas, strawberries, etc)
  • 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum*
  • 1/4 teaspoon guar gum*
  • Stevia to taste
*Don't like the idea of using gums or don't have any? That's okay! Just use 3-5 ice cubes in it's place. Just make sure to blend it will and you are good to go!

Directions

  1. Pour all ingredients into a large blender
  2. Blend until all ingredients are fully combined and the texture of the mixture resembles a thick milk-shake. If desired, add additional ice to thicken consistency and texture.
  3. (Soft) Serve with any toppings you choose! Chocolate chips, cocoa nibs, coconut, nuts, dried fruit or fresh fruit!
* You will know this is ready when the blender makes a softer whirring noise and the mixture grows in size! Feel free to use any flavours you like--I added extra cocoa and chocolate protein for a chocolate version!

This got so out of hand you guys. First of all, 1 giant serving (more than pictured) has less than 200 calories. Depending on the toppings, of course. So I don't feel bad eating the whole. Entire. Thing.

I kept taking spoonfuls in between shots.

Pile on those toppings! Just like your own personal Pinkberry! Mmmm...berries.

Not just berries...but cookies....?

Guess who made an appearance? The protein cookie! Oh my gosh. UNREAL. Make both of them right now and just..ahhh..The softness of the cookie and the coolness of the soft-serve. No words.

I mean NO words. Soft and melty-in-your-mouthy. Oh yeahhhh! Wait...I have plenty of words!

Then...I piled on some more toppings...and some vegan protein caramel sauce JUST to be safe?

Oh..and some berries and OF COURSE a sprig of mint. I am obsessed with the Sorted Food channel on YouTube. And they love their touch of green and can you blame them? No you can't! They're brilliant by the way-- check out their channel!

No you can't blame them at all.

I hope you enjoyed this quick recipe! It couldn't be easier and I SWEAR to you, this taste good enough to motivate me to drive to my gym which honestly isn't that convenient now that I'm working regular hours. Nothing says self-conscious like spandex, bad lighting and beefcakes galore. But I digress, this soft-serve is just that good. The best part? Top it and flavour it however you want to!

My mom and I kept alternating bites of various toppings. Just so you know--they all taste great especially TOGETHER.

Warmer weather will bring me lots of these, I can tell. Maybe I can open up my own fro-yo type place...called..proteinberry? Too obvious? Ah well. Just between us then, eh?

Happy Blending!

XO

  1. Made in South Korea on October 19, 2014, with a twist. I subbed cold coffee for the almond milk and omitted the fruit and sweetener (also the guar gum because I didn't have any, but thank you for introducing me to xanthan gum!).

    1. Lauren! I am so happy you make this. I cannot live without my protein soft-serve! There are endless possibilities too -- the coffee flavour would be so good in this!
