Healthy Halloween 2015

Halloween.

IS NEAR.

And although I don't feel the usual butterflies in my belly about the whole thing this year, I am still pretty excited.

I have always been more a fan of the grim and creepy -- so Halloween is sort of my thing. It gives me a chance to feel a bit LESS weird than I usually do about regularly adorning my room with skulls, skeletons and all things Nightmare Before Christmas.

On the Halloween roster this year I have: Nightmare Before Christmas (a-duh!), Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, ParaNorman, The Conjuring, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and maybe Coraline.

I don't know if I will get to them all but I sure hope so!

Halloween is obviously about candy and chocolate and all things creepy and delicious. If you are throwing a Halloween party why not include some of these?! I mean...it may off-set some of those late night mini-snickers bar binges. Does anyone else tell themselves that the mini versions are like 1/10th of the calories even though they're really not?! Hehe

On a side note: a lovely reader actually made these and said everyone at her party LOVED them -- so that's an option too!

1. Candy Corn Protein Squares

Creamy, citrus HEAVEN with a protein kick ;)

2. Halloween Cake Pops

I coloured these green for fun but you can make any colour cake you would like!

3. Pumpkin Patch Brownies

Fudgey Brownies topped with a spooky pumpkin patch!

4. World's Healthiest Pumpkin Pie

No party is complete without pumpkin! Cut out ghosts for the top instead for a fun spooky twist!

5. Healthy Halloween Matcha Donuts

These delightfully green donuts are so cute! Decorate them any way you want!

6. Black Magic Protein Squares

One of my favourites. These protein squares are for the chocolate fudge lovers!

Alright! Well that's a start. Fill up a dessert table with treats cut to size. Mini versions are fun to carry around. It makes it easier to jam in your mouth so you flee from ghosts!

I think a big bowl of blood (cranberry juce or sangria), monster juice (anything green) or a number of drinks would pair nicely with these little treats.

Are you ready for Halloween? I can't wait to put together my very....interesting costume!

Happy Healthy Halloween!

XO

Black Magic Protein Squares

I've got the magic in me,
I took one look at it's cute skulls and bones --
Everybody knows I've got the magic in me,
I ate it all and it's in my bellyyyy
Now everybody wants squares of black magic

Do I have to start Halloween posts with a song?

Um, the answer is actually yes.

Where is your spooky spirit, sir?

Speaking of spooky I saw Crimson Peak last night.

Not only was it spooky but it also had eye candy. And these bars have candy eyes. So this is all relevant information.

Anyways, they filmed a lot of it in my home town. Lately driving to work is a nightmare because they film a lot of things downtown. When I found out Charlie Hunnam and Tom Hiddleston AND Guillermo Del Toro were all going to be in the same place, AKA 10 minutes from my office, well -- it made me pretty happy.

And then I didn't meet them and loads of other people did and I was a super sad panda.

But you know what reverses S.P.S. (sad panda syndrome)?

YES THESE BARS I MEAN LOOKIT THAT GOOD TIMING AMIRITE?

Decadent, fudgey and absolutely delicious.

Protein bars meet fudge. Fudge, meet protein bars. Now make sweet, sweet protein bar babies together.

Awe yahhhhh!

I had so much fun piling these guys up and flicking Halloween sprinkles all over the place like Halloween Oprah.

YOU'RE GETTING A BONE, AND YOU'RE GETTING A SKULL AND EVERYBODY'S GETTTINNGGG SPRINKLESSS!

You go Halloween Oprah, you GO!

So in honour of Halloween, Tom Hiddleston, film crews and Halloween Oprah, I present to you the most delicious protein bar ever.

Healthy Halloween Matcha Donuts

Double double, toil and trouble
Pass me a donut for my tummy rumble,
Pinch of matcha, dash of salt
If they all get eaten -- it's not my fault!

In the oven, roast and bake
Save me a monster one -- for goodness' sake!
Candy eyes and sugar skulls
I'll eat and eat until my belly's full!

HALLOWEEEENNN IS ALMOST HEEEREEE!!!!

I know you have heard me wax poetic about my love for Halloween. Maybe here with my spooky cake pops, or here with my macabre cemetery brownies.

Or perhaps you've heard that cheeky little son of a gun up there chatting about my love for Halloween.

Oh god I love it so much.

My entire room is Halloween theme all-year round. I am a Tim Burton fanatic so purple and black, black and white strips, and kooky skeletons are things of my dreams, really.

So when it comes to Halloween I go a bit nuts.

Every September I peruse  Michael's, Bulk Barn, Wal-Mart, and every dollar store in the area and I pick up scary, adorable, wonderful, AMAZING Halloween things of every type. Baking supplies, chocolate molds, cupcake liners, napkins, goodie bags -- you name it.

So when I was trying to pick a Halloween recipe to test out for this year I was kind of stuck on what to experiment with.

Orange and black are obvious choices, right?

But purple is so totally halloweeny!

But what's purple? Not very many things...Except blueberries...but those are blue.

DAMMIT!

 So I decided on  GREEN!

But what's green? Spinach, kale, apples, pears...hmmmm....

MATCHAAAA!!

I made these Matcha protein squares a while ago and they were such a hit. I have kind of been obsessed with creating a donut version.

 SO ..

Naturally, I decided on adorably spooky matcha donuts. Green is kind of Frankenstein-y and creepy *but delicious* and then you decorate them with whatever Halloween sprinkles you have! Or slap a few big candy googly eyes on there and call it a day.

These are fluffy, moist, sweet, slightly earth and mild and absolutely DELICIOUS!

Like...they are SCARY good. I had my taste-testers *who don't like green tea* give them a shot and they LOVED them.

Try them and let me know how ghoul...I mean good....they are :D!
